The impact of the total environment in the care and management of dementiaUniversity of Tasmania, Faculty of Nursing, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia The way in which carers interact with residents is dependent on physical layout elements, how care is organized, available support and knowledge of carer processes. The major aim of this study was to examine the impact of the total environment in the care and management of dementia, based on interviews, observations and carer feedback sessions. Using the total environment model, a set of dementia care propositions evolved, which held true to all dementia units in the study. The propositions were used as guidelines for carers to participate in the development of strategies to improve the total environment.
