Systemic Inflammatory Markers and Risk of DementiaDepartment of Neurology, Jagiellonian University, Botaniczna 3, 31-503 Krakow, Poland; dziedzic{at}cm-uj.krakow.pl Inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. This article reviews the results of prospective studies demonstrating that the level of systemic inflammation markers, particularly C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, can predict cognitive decline or dementia. The potential mechanisms linking systemic inflammatory molecules to cognitive decline are also discussed.
