A survey of the service needs of caregivers of Alzheimer patients in Maryland's capital area

Howard A. Palley, PhD

School of Social Work, University of Maryland, at Baltimore, Maryland

This study is based on a pilot survey of 24 caregivers of community-based Alzheimer's disease patients in Montgomery County and Prince Georges County, Maryland. Service needs indicated by the data are-affordable, reliable respite care, companion programs and homemaker services; available residential care and housing for those not requiring custodial care; legal assistance; policies to alleviate financial burden; day care; transportation assistance; knowledgeable, understanding and sympathetic physicians; and a centralized effort to coordinate services and provide guidance to caregivers in need of assistance.
